Australia – 24 unis on world’s most global list
THE AUSTRALIAN,
Australia has over half of its universities in a list of the world’s 200 most internationalised higher education institutions, but is beaten by New Zealand which has 7 out of eight on the list, and the UK, which has 64 out of 106.
The ranking from Times Higher Education isolates a small part of its annual university ranking which looks at the ratios of international staff, students and research and accounts for just 7.5 per cent of the total score in the full ranking.
Australian National University tops the Australian list coming in at 25. It is followed by Curtin (26), University of Western Australia (31), University of Technology Sydney (46) and Macquarie (49).
In an inversion of usual performance in rankings, the US has only nine universities in the list — all highly elite private institutions.
Anne-Marie Lansdown, deputy chief executive of Universities Australia, said the list was a “testament to the tireless work of Australia’s universities to become genuinely global in their reach and outlook”.
“The internationalisation of our universities is important for Australia’s economic growth, social cohesion and diplomatic ties,” she said.
“The imminent release of the National Strategy for International Education should further drive and strengthen our global position as a leader in international education.”
THE rankings editor Phil Baty said the league table focused on universities that showed potential, potential, competitiveness and dynamism.
“An institution’s global outlook is one of the key markers of a prestigious university. The top institutions hire faculty from all over the world, attract students from a global market of top talent and collaborate with leading departments wherever they happen to be based,” he said.
Qatar University, which is ranked in the 601-800 category in the main global ranking, topped the list.
